Royal Ascot is the UK’s biggest hose racing extravaganza, attended by the Royal family, celebrities and the elite of British society. If you are lucky enough to get your hands on a ticket, your thoughts will probably be turning to that all-important question: What do I wear?

Your first port of call should definitely be the annual Royal Ascot Style Guide, which this year has been rebranded as the Royal Ascot Lookbook to inspire racegoers to be a bit more inventive in the way they dress up, while still sticking to the enclosure dress codes. Rather than splitting style tips up separately per enclosure, the new guide is divided into six sections with different themes:  Luxe, Tailoring, Pre-Loved & Rental, Vintage, High Street and Emerging Designer.

Now in its 12th year, the guide is released three months ahead of the five-day June event and is renowned for setting the fashion tone and predicting key trends for the British summer social season. The new Lookbook is curated by renowned stylist Luke Jefferson Day with stunning images captured by world-renowned photographer Damian Foxe. It champions British designers while also encouraging racegoers to embrace sustainability by incorporating second-hand items into their outfits or using rental platforms such as HURR and Selfridges Rental.

The concept of a Royal Ascot Dress Code dates back to the turn of the 19th century when Regency dandy Beau Brummell – hailed as Britain’s first fashion icon- dictated a dress code for men in the Royal Enclosure. He decreed that “men of elegance should wear waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons”; this set the tone for the dress code that is still adhered to by men in the Royal Enclosure.

Over the years, Royal Ascot has become “synonymous with sartorial elegance” according to the organisers of this prestigious racing event – a statement which is supported by the fact that visitors to the event spend an estimated £33 million on fashion each year (source: Deloitte).

A largely outdoor area, this enclosure, opened in 2017, is the first new enclosure for Royal Ascot in 100 years. Jackets and trousers are acceptable attire for men, while ladies are invited to wear wedges and smaller hats.

Ladies

Ladies within the Village Enclosure are required to dress in a manner as befits a formal occasion and are kindly asked to take note of the following:
