When it comes to growing your professional network, this is perhaps the most important ‘C’ of all. Every relationship, whether personal or professional, requires cultivation if it is to grow and flourish.
It’s all very well attending lots of networking events, having some great conversations and collecting an impressive pile of business cards. But it’s what happens next that really counts in terms of building up a strong professional network.
Always make a point of following up with the people you have met by sending an email or a LinkedIn message within 24 hours of the meeting. Keep it brief but say how much you enjoyed speaking with them and ask if they would like to connect again, either in-person or via video chat or telephone.
If you promised to forward them an article or connect them with someone, make sure that you deliver on that promise. This will mark you out as someone who is reliable, helpful and generous, which will stand you in good stead if you ever need a favour from them in the future.
