The terms ‘fixed mindset’ and ‘growth mindset’ were coined by American psychologist Carol Dweck to describe the underlying beliefs people have about learning and intelligence. She found that when students believe that they can become smarter, they are more likely to put in the time and effort that lead to higher achievement.
On the other hand, students with a fixed mindset believe that their abilities, intelligence and talents are determined by factors that are outside of their control and cannot be changed. Therefore, they are more likely to give up and to feel negatively about themselves if they make a mistake or do not perform as well as they had expected.
Parents and teachers can encourage children to cultivate a growth mindset by praising hard work and effort rather than labelling them as ‘smart’.
