“The most beautiful thing you can wear is confidence” – Blake Lively
One thing most of our students have in common is that they want to feel more confident. Confidence is a key factor in making a lasting impression and being successful in any social or professional setting.
We all have times when we’re plagued by self-doubt, anxiety or low self-esteem but there are many things you can do to boost your confidence and, in turn other people’s perception of you. Social confidence is not an innate quality that some lucky people are simply born with. Everyone can learn to feel at ease in social situations and master the art of connecting with other people.
If you want to be the most confident person in the room, here are 5 tips to help you achieve that:

1. Dress to impress
Don’t underestimate the effect that a well-fitting outfit, flattering hairstyle and carefully chosen accessories can have on your self-confidence. Make sure you dress appropriately for the occasion and feel comfortable in what you are wearing. Choose outfits that flatter your body and make you feel confident.

2. Be prepared
Preparation is key to confidence. Whether it’s a job interview or a social gathering, do your homework and research beforehand. Knowing what to expect and having a game plan can help you feel more at ease and confident. It might help to practice with a friend or run through similar situations from the past in your head and think about what went well and what you might like to do differently.

3. Practice positive self-talk
The way you speak to yourself can have a profound effect on your confidence. Make sure to practice positive self-talk and focus on your strengths. Avoid negative self-talk and instead focus on what you can bring to the table.
Using positive affirmations or statements to challenge negative thoughts is scientifically proven to reduce stress and boost confidence. Here are some affirmations that you can try today:
- I am inspired by things happening all around me.
- I am grateful for the people I have in my life.
- I grow and improve every day.
- I treat myself kindly and with compassion.
- I am grateful for the things I have in life.

4. Use confident body language
Your body language can speak volumes about your confidence level. Stand tall, make eye contact, and use gestures to emphasize your points. Don’t be afraid to take up space and avoid slouching or fidgeting.
To achieve a confident, assertive posture when standing, place your feet shoulder width apart and distribute your weight equally on both legs while angling your feet towards the person you are speaking with. Imagine a string pulling your head up towards the sky and a straight line running from your earlobes through your shoulders, hip and the middle of your ankles.

5. Speak up and be assertive
Being confident also means being assertive and speaking up for yourself. Share your ideas and opinions with others and don’t be afraid to take the lead. Believe in yourself and your abilities, and others will follow suit.
Don’t be offended if anyone disagrees with you and do not start an argument to try and prove your point. A big part of being confident is accepting other people for who they are and not trying to impose your views on them. Confident people show respect while listening to others and do not feel the need to dominate the conversation or take themselves too seriously.

In conclusion, being the most confident person in the room takes practice, but it’s achievable with these tips. Remember to dress to impress, be prepared, practice positive self-talk, use confident body language, and speak up and be assertive. With these strategies, you’ll exude confidence and leave a lasting impression on everyone you meet.
